The Last Mile

So, none of you have asked, just how hilly is that last hill in your neighbothood that you run when run your long runs? Well, it is this hilly:

060316mile

I went [in a geeky way] and broke down the grade by 0.05 mile or 264 feet:

Distance
Mile
Percent Grade
(%)
(- is downhill)
0.05 9.47
0.1 2.65
0.15 8.71
0.2 4.92
0.25 3.79
0.3 8.71
0.35 10.98
0.4 13.64
0.45 -4.92
0.5 7.58
0.55 -2.65
0.6 -2.27
0.65 -4.17
0.7 1.52
0.75 12.5
0.8 7.58
0.85 1.14
0.9 -11.36
0.95 -4.92
10.0 -1.14

For reference, most highway off-ramps are 4-percent grade.

So now you can see why I don’t get all up in arms when my pace drops from a 9 minute pace to a 10-11-12 minute pace. It’s because that last mile is hard… and it’s work! But the last 0.1 of a mile is all downhill! In fact, it is all downhill until I get to my driveway, which isn’t that much further… but still!
