So from my previous post, you should be aware that I am continuing my marathon training, especially since I am now in the taper mode of my marathon training. The taper is generally the toughest time of all the training because we reduce our weekly mileage the closer we get to marathon day. The theory is that we heal our body but without losing pour conditioning so that we can peak on race day. However, at this point in the training, a 4 mile run seems useless… and 8 mile run is just okay and we’d like to be doing something closer to 16 just to consider it a good workout.
Lucky for me that my mid week runs are anything significant in the realms of mileage. With my max midweek distance of 5 miles and an average of something closer to 4, I can maintain my weekly workouts without worry. This will actually be more beneficial to me mentally than anything else. I won’t see any dip in my workouts except for my long runs on the weekends. That is, if my feet holds up.
So, the plan is to keep my weekly runs during the week but nix the speed workout. I will replace that with a tempo run or an easy run. I only have 2 long runs left, this weekend I will run only 12 miles and then 8 or 9 the week before the marathon. I am hoping that this will be enough to keep my conditioning without hurting my foot as I get a podiatrist appointment. Since I have to call in the appointment to my regular doctor (HMO procedures) I doubt that I will get an appointment before next week and that will mean that it’ll be too close to race day to do anything. So I will continue to run…
Now today’s weather here in Knoxville was outstanding. It was around 73 degrees and sunny. SS shirt and short weather, except… except that there is a Wind Advisory for this area until 6:30pm. So, although it was a nice day, it was windy… very windy in some spots. I called Marty to arrange our running time in advance so that we could maximize our outing. About 10 minutes before I had to leave to go to the aquatic center, I get a call from him that he had a malfunction. He had ran out of gas on the out skirts of campus, in the turn lane nonetheless. So, I had to walk up to the BP, get a gas can and some gas, walk to my car and go find him. Sure enough, I found him and we found a parking spot pretty close to the Aquatic center. I still had to change, so I ran into change and guess what… I forgot my socks!
Yes, I forgot my socks… but not in any ordinary, Terry for got his socks way. I had brought 4 pairs of socks from home and proceeded to shove them into the file cabinet drawer with my running stuff. Not once did I think, “Hey, I might need these”. So, I ended up just using my khaki cotton socks that I was wearing at work. So I look like a doofuss running with dress socks on… but I am still running.
We took a different route today but started out like we normally do for going to Volunteer Landing, except that when we crossed under Neyland Drive, we head west back on Neyland. This connects us back up with Neyland Greenway and we can connect up with 3rd Creek greenway and that we can take to the Ag Campus and to Volunteer Blvd where Marty was parked. We ended up running 3.57 miles in a time of 32.35 or about 9:05 pace.
So you’re asking about my foot… apart from looking goofy with the dress socks, I could “feel” my left foot and it never caused me any difficultly while running. It is a little sore right now, but it’s not continuously sore, just when I push on it. I also used my Nike Max Moto II tody instead of the Vitruvians. I don’t think that shoes are the culprit, but there could be something with the way the shoe is shaped, that runs the wrong way. So, with my foot still hurting after using the Moto II, I can’t come to any conclusion on the shoes. I will take some sinus & cold medicine and the tylenol will help with the foot and I will ice it tonight after the kidlets are in bed. I do plan on running tomorrow unless something decides to fall off during the night.
